Directorate of Internal Audit

Internal Audit authority and mandate is derived from Makerere University Council. Our functions, activities and operations are defined in an audit charter. The University Council by policy establishes Internal Audit to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services. In addition, we provide an appraisal function by examining, evaluating University activities/operations aimed at value adding services, improving resource utilization, accountability, controls and processes improvement.

We utilize best practices to execute appropriate risk management, internal control and governance practices. We recognize that Management/ Administrative Units, Academic Units, Support Units, Service and Commercial Units are responsible for strong internal controls. We facilitate these control efforts by working proactively within all levels of the University to drive results for improved controls.

We have qualified, competent, experienced and skilled staff who execute audit assignments according to our annual audit plan.

The Directorate of internal audit reports to the Audit Committee of Council. The Audit committee is comprised of experienced and professional non executive members.

Our Objectives are to;

1. Review and assess the functioning of systems, processes and controls.

2. Identify, assess and evaluate risks affecting achieving University objectives.

3. Appraise the economy and efficiency with which resources are allocated and utilised

4. Review compliance with applicable policies, plans, procedures, laws and regulations.

5. Coordinate with External Auditors in the areas above.

6. To recruit, develop and retain well qualified experienced and motivated audit staff.

We provide both Pre-audit and Post-audit. Pre-audit services cover; payment review, verification of deliveries, review of accountabilities and pay change reports. Post-Audit services entail; Financial audits, operational audits, compliance audits, follow-up audits and Fraud & Investigative audits.
